FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

Family photography is so close to my heart. It’s magic, it’s real, beautiful, it’s often messy, it’s storytelling.. I have two girls myself (not so little any more!) and I still love capturing them at every stage and celebrating the ‘now’, as much as I love to look back on different chapters of our family life.

These photographs taken over the years are about marking and remembering the days that fly by so quickly. It’s just as much about ‘getting a nice one of you all’ as it is about showing how life is now, because next year and in five, ten years time everything will have changed so much again..

I approach family photography much the same way that I approach weddings - it’s all about capturing the beauty in the reality. These are the days.

We’ll either find a location that you love or shoot at home. The session will feel like a mix of hanging out together, getting a few photos of you all as a family, a few special individual portraits and also letting little ones play while I’m capturing whatever unfolds! It’s a mix of gentle direction and shooting in a very natural way - nothing too staged or corny here.

I’m a big believer in capturing the normal, the every day, the individuality of people and celebrating the here and now. It’s not about perfection, it’s about the real.

FAQs

Where should we go for our shoot?

It’s completely up to you! I personally love a family shoot in the home because it doesn’t get more personal than that (it’s often better suited for babies too), but if you’d rather go to another location I’d recommend somewhere special to you or somewhere that you enjoy spending time like the beach or a local green space where we can all have a wander and take photographs along the way.

Do you do bump-to-baby shoots?

I do! And (subject to availability and location) I’m open to splitting a full shoot into two sessions to cover 30 minutes of bump photos and 30 minutes of newborn photos.

Can we include our pets in the shoot?

Absolutely - they are part of your family too!

How many people can be at the shoot?

For a full hour-long shoot I’d recommend keeping the number of attendees to 12 or fewer, but if you’re looking to involve your wider family then we can talk about how this would work on the day. Multi-generational family shoots are really special and make for a lovely time together (and great presents!) For mini family shoots I would recommend keeping attendees at six or fewer.

What should we wear?

I don’t have lots of advice other than you should be comfortable and feel like yourselves. If you’d like to complement each other in terms of colours etc then it’s up to you but I’m going to be there to capture personalities and moments first!

What if my kids are having an ‘off’ day?

It happens! I’m a Mum myself and I’ve been through it all! With younger children who are more likely to need a moment to reset it may be worth thinking about a few distractions like snacks, toys or activities to have in your arsenal as the shoot goes on; at other times it might just be worth giving them a breather and changing direction before trying to involve them more again.

How long does it take to get our gallery?

I aim to get a few preview photos over to you within a week and then you should receive your fully edited gallery within four weeks.

Do you do gift vouchers?

I do! They especially make for great ‘new baby’ and for parents and grandparents. When I shoot multi-generational family shoots they are often for a big birthday or a special wedding anniversary to mark the occasion together.
